Founded informally in 2013 as a close-knit group of friends united by a shared passion for music, Substance Controlled, LLC spent over a decade evolving from a passionate local crew into a streamlined, high-performing independent infrastructure.
In 2024, the organization officially registered as an LLC in the state of Michigan. The pivotal moment came with the official signing of Ann Arbor native artist Daijon T. Munson (who released music under his birth name, “Booder”). Shortly after signing, Substance Controlled launched a relentless campaign, releasing more than three full-length albums in a matter of months. This massive run instantly put the label on the map, forging key partnerships with influential Midwest hip-hop collectives—including Formula 734 and NonStop Hip-Hop—as well as music enterprises globally. Since it’s launch, the company has co-signed the underground lo-fi king known as Muntana, the experimental sonic producer The Big Mammu, and MC De’Rw.
Today, Substance Controlled LLC operates at a unique cross-section of the music industry: an independent powerhouse capable of charting a single globally for over 26 consecutive weeks, yet so deeply rooted in its hometown that you can still run into the founder almost anywhere.

Just as the sounds are raw and pure as the form of the body who created it, we favor the same outside of the studio- whether in the streets, in the books, in the pictures, we’re aware of conformity. It isn’t for us.
